Excellent piece of work Packy. I too am a great fan of Masa's optimism, visionary outlook and perseverance. However, those character traits, if not checked can easily lead to Narcissism and over-confidence, two behaviors that are dangerous for any entrepreneur to have, simultaneously.
I think, once the man decides to take or sabbatical or subscribe to your newsletter, he may just get back in the flow.
I have to say I am cheering for him as well. If Goldman Sachs can report 2.5b in trading revenue in Q2, why can’t Masa report double that for the period ending Sept. 30? In this environment, was there a punchier way to spend $4billion (on some of the most dominant companies In the world, enabling a continuation of commerce) during a pandemic? Assuming he took profits along the way and the fact that he has ARM, and as much BABA as he does, as a backstop: what.a.move.
Great piece Packy. Terribly insightful to say the least. Masa like you said is "an unrelenting optimist", a high risk taker who will rather go big than go home! He must also be quite the talker, to have gotten $45b out of MBS, quite the haggler to have gotten the deal off Steve Jobs and also quite the persuader to have gotten a one-on-one with Den Fujita at the age of 16!
Great summary! I think the "over-optimism" is definetely there but market punishes their stock way too much... Arm is a prime example - it was a deal that widened the discount drastically yet now Masa's discussing a sale at a profit
Masa Madness
I’m more bullish but what a good write up !

Amazing write up. Idk if he'll pull it off. But I think he just might.
Another fantastic article Packy!
